W.E.H. Lecky

William Edward Hartpole Lecky was an Irish historian born in 1838 at Newtown park near Dublin. Although he originally studied divinity and published books on the history of morals he is primarily remembered for writing his multi-volume History of England during the Eighteenth Century. From this work was drawn his now canonical History of Ireland in the Eighteenth Century.
His statue was created by John Goscombe in 1904 and stands on the south side of the Campanile in the Library Square of Trinity College Dublin.

Today I came across a great post from about two years ago on the “lifestyle blogzine” haha.nu. Its topic? Photos of weird, baffling and wonderful sculptures and statues from all around the world. Now I’m no sculpture aficionado, but I do know amazing public art when I see it:
(This one’s from Kunming, Yunnan, China – photo from Karate Party)
(This one’s from Olso, Norway. Artist – Gustav Vigeland)
These are probably my favourites, but there’s another ninety odd photos to peruse on the site. Plenty of material to scratch your head at.
Speaking of strange statues, did you know that the largest statue of Lenin in the U.S.A. is located in Fremont, Washington? And this is no ‘reclaimed’ capitalist statue like the one that used to stand in front of a Dallas restaurant and had the words “America Won” engraved underneath it, nor is is like the beheaded Lenin of Las Vegas. It’s a fully fledged, pro-Soviet, cold war era statue originally from Slovakia. Bizarre.
